THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has disclosed that it is seeking assistance from regional and international bodies to facilitate the return of Emmanuel Mwamba, the Patriotic Front (PF) information and publicity chairman back to Zambia from the United States of America.
Mark Simuuwe, the UPND media director has announced that the ruling party has written to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the United States Embassy in Lusaka, the European Union (EU), and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to push for Mr Mwamba’s return.
Mr Simuuwe in a statement is accusing Mr Mwamba, currently in the USA was allegedly abusing asylum procedures and making false claims of political persecution.
He said Mr Mwamba left Zambia voluntarily and was neither under house arrest nor subjected to any travel restrictions.
“His claims of persecution and political asylum are false, politically motivated, and designed to mislead both local and international audiences,” he said.
He said Mr Mwamba faces lawful prosecution in Zambia and accused him of fleeing to avoid the legal process.
Mr Simuuwe is claiming that Zambia was a democratic country governed by the rule of law and that all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, should be accountable to the courts.
He stressed the importance of accuracy and integrity in journalism, particularly in cases involving national security and legal accountability.
Mr Simuuwe claimed that the UPND as the governing party was commitment to justice, transparency, and ensuring that individuals facing legal charges do not escape accountability through misinformation or evasion.
