Build on Zambia’s legacy of peace, unity, AU urges HH

THE African Union (AU) has called on President Hakainde Hichilema to build on Zambia’s record of peace, unity, stability and democratic governance as he embarks on his second term following his landslide victory in the August 13 general elections.

Speaking at President Hichilema’s inauguration yesterday, AU representative, Ambassador Hilda Suka-Mafudze, delivered a message on behalf of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.

Ms Suka-Mafudze congratulated President Hichilema on his re-election, saying Zambia’s peace and democratic stability should remain and important national asset that should be strengthened over the next five years.

Ms Suka-Mafudze has also commended Zambia’s economic reforms, expressing hope that the second term will deliver more inclusive economic growth, create opportunities for citizens and advance sustainable development.

“The African Union worked closely with Zambia during the electoral process through an election assessment mission and an observation mission led by former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn,” she said.

The continental body has also urged Zambia to continue playing a leading role in promoting African unity, integration and solidarity.

Ms Suka-Mafudze said Zambia’s historical contribution to the liberation of Africa and its commitment to Pan-Africanism placed the country in a strong position to contribute to a more united and self-reliant Africa.

Ms Suka-Mafudze said the AU was looking forward to working with President Hichilema’s administration in advancing Agenda 2063 and building a peaceful, integrated and prosperous continent.

The African Union said Zambia’s responsibility extended beyond consolidating its domestic gains to strengthening its contribution to Africa’s collective development and unity. -MILLENNIUM TV.
