Mundubile, Makebi a beacon of democracy - Nyirenda

By BARNABAS ZULU BRIAN Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu are Zambia's beacon of democracy who deserve to be recognised for the exceptional performance in challenging President Hakainde Hichilema in the August 13 general elections, Brenda Nyirenda has said. Ms Nyirenda, the Lundazi Member of Parliament has thanked NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile for adopting her to contest the Lundazi parliamentary seat on the party's ticket under the Tonse/Pamodzi Alliance in the August 13, 2026 general elections. Delivering her maiden speech in Parliament yesterday, Ms Nyirenda described Mr Mundubile as a beacon of democracy who deserved recognition for his performance in the presidential election. She said Mr Mundubile had contested the presidency for the first time but managed to secure 1.8 million votes and over 50 Members of Parliament, a feat the ruling party had failed in many of its attempts to take over the governance of the country while in opposition. Ms Nyirenda said the election results had demonstrated that the opposition commanded significant support among Zambians and should not be disregarded. She has advised the ruling UPND to consider working with the opposition political parties in promoting national unity and advancing the country's development. "It's not an easy achievement. In any case, for those who may not understand the extent of this victory, His Excellency the President (Hakainde Hichilema) got three million and Brian got 1.8 million. Now let me bring it home. It means that every five voters that you meet, two of them voted for Brian Mundubile and three voted (for Hakainde Hichilema). That is the ratio that we are dealing with," Ms Nyirenda said. She urged members of Parliament from both the ruling party and opposition to put aside their political differences and work together for the benefit of the country. "There's need for the opposition and the ruling party to work together. There is need for us to ensure that our people are united because behind every voter, there is a family," Ms Nyirenda said. She also congratulated National Assembly Speaker Nelly Mutti and Vice-President Mutale Nalumango on their re-election. Ends.
