PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has congratulated Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta following that country’s election to the United Nations Security Council as non-permanent member for the period 2021 – 2022.
In his congratulatory message to his counterpart, President Lungu said his government was confident that Kenya will add to the impetus of promoting peace and harmony among the UN member states.
“It is with a great sense of satisfaction that I offer my congratulation, following the election of the republic of Kenya to serve as a member of the United Nation Security Council for the period 2021 – 2022. Non-permanent category,” stated President Lungu in his message.
Mr Lungu said Zambia persistently supported the Kenyan candidature out of conviction, given that country’s positive record and its on-going contribution to the African continent agenda within the multilateral framework.
He noted that Kenya has continued sacrificing in the quest to bring peace to its neighboring countries and that he has no doubt that Kenya will rise to the challenges of the responsibility of representing the African continent on the UN Security Council.
The 15-member Security Council has five permanent members — the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France and 10 elected members with seats allocated to regional groups and five new members elected every year.
Kenya which was endorsed by the African Union, joins fellow elected members, India, Ireland, Mexico, and Norway that will enter the UN Security Council at a crucial time to contribute to global conversations that entail peace and security, climate change, gender issues, human rights, and international development among other functions.
