THE 2017 Mopani/Redpath Zambia Open Golf Championship prize money has been set at US$300,000 (K3, 000,000).

The prize money may increase with the coming in of more sponsors.

This year’s tournament has shifted to Nkana Golf Club in Kitwe after initial bid winners Nchanga Golf Club in Chingola withdrew from hosting the event scheduled for May 29 to June 4.

Zambia Open organising committee chairperson Emmanuel Mutati  said despite Nkana coming in at a short notice as hosts, they will ensure the event matches international standards.

“We are committed to meeting the standards set when Nkana last held the event in 2015 despite coming in at short notice as hosts. We will certainly not reduce the prize money, the least we can do is to maintain it, and we have to raise the bar we set for ourselves in 2015. We will certainly not reduce the amount,” he said.

And Mutati said Nkana was thrilled to host the Africa Region 5 Golf Championships to be held from April 10 to 14.

“Although it is an amateur and junior tournament, we still need to put in every effort to make it successful. We will therefore take the tournament with the same seriousness just like in the Zambia Open,” he said.

He urged the committees for both championships to work tirelessly to deliver the best golfing events.
