ARTISTS must be mindful of the messages they put out in their songs because they are like shepherds leading sheep and music influences people’s behavior, says Founder of Music for Change, and ambassador in the fight against HIV, Brian Bwembya has said.

Mr Bwembya popularly known as B-Flow is also a gender activist, said music was one of the most powerful tools that could be used to spread messages and influence people’s behavior because it is friendly to all.

“We have a following and our fans look up to us for guidance on what and what not to do because we are like shepherds; a good shepherd is one who leads his sheep to good things,” he said

Mr Bwembya said that many artists today were not realizing how much influence they have, in fact most of them have become the sheep and not the shepherds because they have become followers of the trends.

“A lot of musicians say they sing about what people want to hear, my good friend  and fellow singer Abel Chungu once said “A good artist makes music that people want but a great artist makes music that people need”, Mr Bwembya said.

Meanwhile women and children’s rights activist Daputsa Zulu popularly known as Sister D said that it was well known that music had tremendous effects and power which could affect both thought and emotion.

Sister D said that negative music would equally have a negative impact on the behavior on society because musicians were looked upon as role models.

“People will follow their dressing, language, character and the type of music. And so through our thoughts and bodies and out into how we relate in groups, people can project the mood of the music they were listening to on other people and society,” she said.
