AfCON 2012 winning goal keeper Kennedy Mweene was the darling of Zambians when he put the Chipolopolo squad back into game after scoring from a spot kick to equalize against a well charged Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Mweene proved to be one of the best goal minders in Africa after he stopped English Premier League side giant Chelsea Football Club star Obi Mikel’s spot kick penalty in the first half of the game in a exciting game played at Mbombela stadium yesterday.
He put the African Champions back into the game after cancelling the 1 goal lead scored through Emmanuel Emenike in the 54th minute of the game
The well charged Chipolopolo team was under pressure after Emenike punished Mweene for the mistake created by Zambia’s’ genius defensive midlefielder Chisamba Lungu who lost the ball to Musa before passing it over to Emenike who easily scored sending the Nigerian technical bench into short lived celebration.
Zambia could have registered goals in the first half of the march but because of poor finishing by strikers there was a drought of goals.
The African Champions showed resilience and faith as they kept on putting pressure on the highly technical Super Eagles of Nigeria led by Stephen Keshi.
Coach Herve Renard was forced to make a late substitution of Isaac Chansa replacing him with Jonas Sakuwaha to sharpen up the front line before underperforming skipper Christopher Katongo was rested for Collins Mbesuma whose presence did not make any difference. Zambia’s chance came when Emmanuel Mayuka was brought down in the box and goalie Mweene made no mistake to put the Chipolopolo back on truck.
Zambia needs to win her final game in the group stage against Burkina Faso to advance to the next stage.
