A ZAMBIA Army non commissioned officer, Boyd Miselo, has continued to shield his son from arrest after he poked out the eye of a Grade 12 schoolboy, Abby Ngoma.
And his employers, the Zambia Army, have said they should not be dragged into the case because it is a very small matter which can be dealt with amicably by the police by following the laid down procedure.
This is despite Mr Miselo hiding his son in the barracks and blocking police when they went to arrest the boy.
When reached for a comment yesterday on what the army was doing to help the police have access to the suspect after Mr. Miselo again failed to turn up at Mtendere police station after lying about the whereabouts of his son the previous day, Zambia Army public relations deputy director Lieutenant-Colonel Sinyinza said the army had decided not to handle the issue as it was a minor case.
Lt. Col. Sinyinza said after the Daily Nation published the story for the second time on Monday, the army had a discussion at which it was resolved that the case at hand was too minor to be dealt with by the army which was too big because Mr. Miselo was a father and an old man capable of handling the issue.
“That is a very minor issue and don’t bring the army into that one. We had a discussion yesterday (on Monday) after your publication and we sent someone to your office and we have realised we should not be handling that minor issue.
“The army is too big for that. Mr. Miselo is a father. He is an old man and is able of handling that issue on his own. Please, don’t involve the army into that (issue). It is so minor that it should not be taking you the whole day (pursuing it),” Lt-Col. Sinyinza said.
He insisted that Mr. Miselo should not be identified as a soldier but as an individual because the army had nothing to do with the case.
Lt-Col. Sinyinza said there was a laid down procedure for the police if they were looking for a suspect from the army and that as long as that procedure was followed, it would be very easy for them to get the person they wanted.
