INEPT investigative agencies are fooling Zambians by being active now that jobs are at stake, Citizens Democratic Party (CDP) president Robert Mwanza has said.
Mr. Mwanza said the fast pace at which the law enforcement agencies were going shows that they were in fear of losing their jobs because they have been moribund all along despite being given a leeway to probe public officials by the previous regime.
He said in an interview that it sends a very wrong signal of how law enforcement agencies operate, for them to start pursuing former government officials now that there was a new government in place.
“Where have they been all this time to start operating like they are newly created institutions?” Mr Mwanza questioned.
Mr. Mwanza said the constitution allowed DEC, ACC and other investigative wings to pursue any person who has erred, whether from the private sector or government institutions.
He wondered whether law enforcement agencies would keep the momentum when the new government settles or go back to their old ways of sitting back and accuse a sitting government that they were being intimidated
“The fear now is that when this government settles, do we see them continue going at the rate at which they are going right now in pursuing people, or are they going to go back to their old ways of sitting back and accuse a sitting government that they are being intimidated,” he said.
Mr. Mwanza said what people want is continuity because the moment they are going to relax then the public would know that the problem is not a sitting government but themselves.
He said the behaviour being portrayed by the law enforcement agencies of being seen to be working just because there is a new government was not good for the country and their institutions.
“Why they were not doing their work at the time we don’t know and we don’t want to hear a situation whereby they are saying maybe they were intimidated by the sitting government at that time, this should not be the case because they are protected by the constitution,” Mr. Mwanza said.
