Can Zambians thrive under IMF?

Dear Editor,

WITH just 30 minutes of light work you can make K60, 000 from K1, 800 investment after six weeks or even better you can make K450, 000 after six months of hard work.

Well, if you can plant three sachets of Cabbage (30, 000 seeds) at home in a flower bed and leave for the rains to water, after six weeks you can sell the seedlings at K2 each and make K60, 000.  (Caution: They are in demand but plan your market carefully).

If you decide to transplant the seedlings and grow them yourself over at least two acres you can make K450, 000 if you manage to sell each cabbage at the current K15 price.

It’s going to be tough and soon commodity prices will skyrocket because the IMF take over requires that subsidies are removed from farming inputs in the same way they have done on fuel and soon on electricity.

Soon the UPND government will only be survived by the rich, the middle and low income bracket will be highly constrained. Of course the PF began this problem.

The last time the Zambian government on the direction of the IMF removed subsidies of these commodities was in May 1988 and instantly the price rise prompted thousands of the urban poor to take to the streets and riot, and the food subsidy was restored after a few days.

You’re better off preparing because soon an average salary will not be good enough. It’s a very tough journey ahead. Those who lived in the Kaunda era remember).

No government which has ever gone to the IMF has ever survived a term in office.

Wherever we want to go, our feet shall take us there. We have the hope that refuses to die.
