HH means business for Zambia – State House

By BARNABAS ZULU PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema’s second term is focused on accelerating economic growth through investment and trade, which will help create jobs, expand business opportunities and increase Government revenue, Whitney Mulobela has said. Mr Mulobela, the State House Chief Communications Strategist says President Hichilema’s message at the groundbreaking ceremony for the US$1.6 billion Phase II expansion of the United Capital Fertiliser ammonia and urea plant in Lusaka on Tuesday is a reflection of his economic development agenda. “Seek ye first accelerated growth through investment and trade, and all other things will be added. This reflects the President’s emphasis on private-sector investment as a driver of economic growth,” Mr Mulobela said. He explained that the expansion of the fertiliser plant was a demonstration of the scale of investment the country was attracting, following the earlier US$600 million investment in Phase I. Mr Mulobela said Phase I, which was commissioned in October 2025, had an annual production capacity of 300, 000 tonnes of urea and 180, 000 tonnes of ammonia, creating more than 3, 000 direct jobs. He said the plant’s development was significant for the country’s ambition to reduce dependence on imported fertiliser and expand its export capacity. Mr Mulobela also pointed to the President’s recent working visit to the United Arab Emirates from September 28 to 30, during which investment commitments worth US$2.14 billion were secured in health, agriculture, tourism and energy. He said more agreements were expected to increase the investment figure towards US$3 billion, including a proposed 100-hectare health city near Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. Mr Mulobela said Mr Hichilema had also challenged mining licence holders at the 2026 Zambia Mining and Investment Insaka to develop their assets instead of leaving them idle. “President Hichilema has set a target of increasing annual copper production to three million tonnes within five years. The President has further warned public officers against delaying projects and investments, stressing that bureaucratic obstacles should not prevent economic opportunities from reaching citizens,” he said. He said the administration’s approach was to strengthen partnerships with the private sector to generate employment, expand business opportunities and increase revenue for public services. ///////////
