Police raid UPND HQ

POLICE in Lusaka yesterday stormed opposition UPND secretariat in Lusaka’s Rhodespark area to search the office for any seditious materials.

Both police and UPND deputy spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa confirmed the raid to the Daily Nation in an interview which took place around 16:00hours.

Mr. Mweetwa who did not give further details said police had a search warrant but vowed that UPND leadership was determined to stop President Sata’s dictatorship.

He said Zambia was now a Police State and it was time the international community expressed interest in the political governance of Zambia because the current leadership was resolved to turn Zambia into a one party state.

Police sources confirmed that they had been sent to find incriminating evidence against UPND president Hakainde Hichilema after publication by the Daily Nation of a story that the party had compiled a dossier on PF corruption.

Lawyers representing Mr. Hichilema who were at the secretariat refused the police to search the office until the lead lawyer Sakwiba Sikota was present.

A fortnight ago police arrested Mr Hichilema for allegedly issuing alarming statements, the move which has been roundly condemned by civil society, the Church and the opposition leadership .

And in a related develpment outspoken UPND member William Banda has been detained at Woodlands police station for assaulting a Muvi TV journalist Lloyd Kapusa.

Police sources told the Daily Nation that Mr Bandawas detained when he reported himself to police.

Mr. Banda last week was reported to have attacked and almost strangled Kapusa who was  covering the event at Woodlands police station
