VEEP CLARIFIES ASSETS RECOVERY AMNESTY

By OLIVER SAMBOKO

VICE president Mutale Nalumango says the amnesty announced by government for wrong doers in the past administration to return what they illegally acquired will only be extended to those willing to come out voluntarily.

She was responding to a question from Kalabo central law maker, Chinga Miyutu during the vice president question time, who wanted to know if government will give amnesty to those in the previous administration who illegally obtained public resources.

Ms Nalumango clarified that after the investigative wings have concluded their work and made arrests, the amnesty will not apply to those individuals who will fail to take advantage of the current offer.

“The amnesty will only apply to those who voluntarily return what was obtained before investigations are carried out,” she said.

Ms Nalumango also said the new dawn government will not victimise anyone and has given ample time to those that might have illegally obtained resources belonging to the Zambian people to surrender them back.

“The new dawn government has given amnesty to all those who served in public office to voluntarily return what they illegally acquired and once investigations are conducted, and some individuals are found wanting, the law will take its course,” she said.

And in responding to another question by Kabushi Member of Parliament, Bowman Lusambo, who challenged the UPND government to state when they will recover the public assert which they said was hidden in Dubai, Ms Nalumango said there is need for all Zambians to introspect about the wrongs that happened.

She said there is nothing alarming about  the statements the new government has been making about the alleged wrongs in the past administration.

Ms Nalumango said investigation are ongoing and that those who have done wrongs have been given ample time to come out and tell the Zambian people what they did.

She also said those who are innocent should not be worried and therefore should stop being agitated by the ongoing probe and recovery of stolen resources.
