Trim Cabinet to save costs – Dodia

By NOEL IYOMBWA
GOVERNMENT should trim the Cabinet to reduce costs and promote fiscal discipline, says Private Sector Development Association (PSDA) chairperson Yusuf Dodia.

Mr Dodia said Government structure had become bloated hence the need to put in place measures to reduce costs.
He suggested that while some ministries should be maintained, others could be merged in other ministries as departments.
Mr Dodia cited Ministry of Community Development and Social Services as one of the ministries that should become a department in the Ministry of Health.
Mr Dodia also suggested that the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development could become a department in the Ministry of General Education.
He has also called on Government to reassess some of the programmes in some ministries that had no impact on the country’s economy.
Mr Dodia observed that some programmes were “copy and paste” from other nations and had no direct impact on the country’s economy.
He also called for all civil servants to have job descriptions to assess them so that every employee could be paid according to the job they perform.
“In my opinion Government has become bloated, there are some ministries that can become departments in other ministries, of course ministries like Finance and Agriculture and others should remain independent.
“This is to make it cheaper to run Government and the other thing is that it is important to have job descriptions for all employees for easy assessment of every employee’s performance and the relevance,” Mr Dodia said.
