GOVERNMENT with support from various cooperating partners has drilled and empowered communities with 73 boreholes across the province.

North-western Province permanent secretary Ephraim Mateyo said the move was in line with the government’s commitment to uplift the lives of rural people by investing in water and sanitation infrastructure.

He said government was committed to ensuring that it met the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal on access to safe and clean drinking water.

‘’These boreholes have since been handed over to the communities for use, Mr Mateyo said.

The permanent secretary was speaking during a Provincial Development Coordinating committee meeting on Friday.

He said in addition, a total of 37 institutional latrines had been constructed in seven districts which had also been handed over to the institutions.

The permanent secretary also said two water supply schemes were under construction in Kabompo and Mwinilunga districts and works had reached an advanced stage.

‘’Furthermore, plans to drill commercial boreholes and installation of water tanks for new districts houses in Manyinga and Ikelenge have advanced and actual works are expected soon, he said.

He also said the construction of small earth-fill dams meant for irrigation and other poverty alleviation efforts in the rural communities was progressing well in various districts in the province
