THE Malawian government is investigating the source of a letter circulated to the media by United Progressive People (UPP) party leader Saviour Chishimba two days ago alleging that he, together with South African politician Julius Malema had been banned from entering that country.

On Thursday, Dr. Chishimba circulated a letter purportedly signed by that country’s Minister of Home Affairs and Internal security, Grace Obama Chiumia, which was allegedly addressed to the Director-General of the Immigration in Malawi and copied to the South African Airways, telling them that the two were prohibited immigrants in Malawi.

“The intelligence report I received this morning has now been confirmed. Attached hereto is a declaration by the Malawian Governmnet that Julius Malema and Saviour Chishimba are prohibited immigrants.

“The instructions by the Malawian government as agreed with the PF regime were that I should be detained in Malawi until my next flight on Sunday (tomorrow),”

Dr. Chishimba posted on his facebook account with an attachment of the said letter. He said he was about to start off but had cancelled the trip, citing security reasons. According to The Citizen news of South Africa, Mr. Malema on Thursday expressed shock to hear of the purported ban and denied having been invited to speak in Malawi as purported by Dr. Chishimba.

“I never spoke good or bad about the government of Malawi or the president of that country,” Mr. Malema said.   Malawi Government spokesperson Nicholas Dausi also dismissed claims by Dr. Chishimba as baseless and unfounded.
