ZAMBIA will not add to the tension in the Korean peninsula but instead pursue peaceful resolutions to the crisis, special assistant to the president for press and public relations Amos Chanda has maintained.

Mr. Chanda said Zambia did not support the deviation and testing of nuclear weapons but that she supported the United Nations position which demanded for the pursuing of peaceful resolutions in resolving the North Korean peninsula crisis.

He said Zambia had maintained her position not to add to the tension in the Korean peninsula but instead pursue peaceful resolutions to the crisis.

“The position of Zambia on the North Korean peninsula is that she does not support the firing or testing of nuclear weapons because we are signatory to the treaty on the ban of proliferation and use of nuclear weapons.

The country supports the position of the United Nations,” Mr Chanda said.

Last week, Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba said Zambia was deeply concerned with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s continued ballistic missiles and nuclear test actions and appealed to that country to abandon its nuclear programmes and comply with the respective resolutions of the UN Security Council.

Mr. Kalaba said Zambia supported calls from the international community for nuclear disarmament.

He urged the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea not to engage in provocative acts but to participate in the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

“The government of the Republic of Zambia is deeply concerned over the continued firing of ballistic missiles and nuclear tests conducted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea despite international outcry to cease such activities.

“As a member of the United Nations and a state party to the treaty on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, Zambia supports calls from the international community for nuclear disarmament and subsequently, the Republic of Zambia, therefore, calls on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to abandon its nuclear programmes and comply with the respective resolutions of the United Nations Security Council,” Mr. Kalaba said.
