Clean-up ZAMMSA, State told

GOVERNMENT must clean-up the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) alleging that it had maintained the same companies that have allegedly been supplying questionable medicines and supplies, says Honey Bee whistleblower and pharmaceutical expert Jerome Kanyika.

Mr. Kanyika, who is a former Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia president accused the officers at ZAMMSA of awarding medicine supply contracts to the same companies that cost the Ministry of Health its credibility.

He claimed that the same companies were partly to blame for the current shortage of drugs in health facilities. He alleged that the same people who were marred with corruption as far back as the Kapoko era had been maintained at ZAMSA, a trend that must not be condoned.

He said that the officers at ZAMSA were without doubt corrupt and must be replaced.

Mr. Kanyika urged the government to put is foot down or it will be caught in the same web that the previous government found itself in.

He insisted that the supply of medicines and medical supplies must be corruption-free because it made a difference in the quality of healthcare in public health facilities.

He wondered why the government could allow the same companies that allegedly supplied substandard medicines and other medical supplies to be awarded contracts. Mr. Kanyika said this stinks of corruption and must be looked into before it is too lat
