OUTSPOKEN United Progressive People Party (UPP) president, Saviour Chishimba has been arrested for defaming President Edgar Lungu.

Zambia Police spokesperson Esther Katongo told the Daily nation that Dr Chishimba has since been warned and cautioned for the offence.

This is in relation to events attributed to Dr Chishimba which occurred around 1st July, 2017 and 8th July 2017 in Lusaka.

“Mr Chishimba has since been detained in police custody and will be charged once the officers are done with the process,” Ms Katongo said.

The police spokesperson earlier told the press that the opposition leader had been picked up and was being questioned, and that he would be charged or released depending on the outcome.

Earlier, UPP spokesperson Mutangwa Mukuka told reporters that their president was arrested at Diamond Television station premises where he was attending a live interview.

“Right now the UPP president Dr Saviour Chishimba has been picked up by the police from Diamond TV where he was featuring on the programme.

“He is being taken to Police Force Headquarters,” Mr Mukuka said.

The UPP leader has been in the media for accusing many senior Government officials of their involvement in corruption.

He has also been cautioned by the Anti-Corruption Commission over various issues including alleged misappropriation of funds at the Olympic Development Youth Centre while he was board chairman.
