ZIMRA officer, bus conductor

A Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) officer and a bus conductor have appeared in the Kariba Magistrate court for engaging in corrupt practices at Chirundu one stop border post.

Duala Mbonda, 34 of 5888 Fidelity South view in Harare and River side flats in Chirundu and Knowledge Maramba of house number 15431 Suningdale 2 Harare, a bus conductor of Urban Connect coaches, appeared in court charged with one count of engaging in corrupt practices contrary to the laws of Zimbabwe.  Facts before court were that on 11th February, 2018, police intelligence operatives, acting on a tip-off, impounded a bus registration number ABS 7276 which was travelling from Lusaka to Harare and loaded with various goods which were to be smuggled through Churundu one stop Border post.  The bus was impounded on the Chirundu/Harare highway were the two accused persons and 13 passengers were arrested for smuggling goods.  The passengers were ordered to pay duty and penalties while the ZIMRA official and his co-accused were charged for graft.    The matter was adjourned to 22nd February, 2018 for commencement of trial.

The new Zimbabwean government led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa has since declared zero tolerance stance on corruption as the southern African nation pushes to revamp its collapsed economy affected by many years of mismanagement and rampant graft in government institutions.
