Wife who denied hubby sex divorced but earns K12, 000

A LUSAKA housewife who was chased from the matrimonial bedroom for denying her husband sex has been divorced in a Local court.

Robert Tembo, 44, of Kabanana compound told the court that he told his wife to move out of the matrimonial bedroom because she denied him conjugal rights by sleeping in clothes.

Tembo was testifying in a case in which his wife, Christine Tembo, 37, sued him for divorce.

The two got married in 1997 and have three children.

Christine told Senior Court Magistrate Miyanda Banda sitting with Magistrate Pauline Newa at Matero Local Court that they has been sleeping separately for two weeks now because he chased her from the bedroom after he told her that she had syphilis and was smelly.

She explained that they came to the same court on January 19, for reconciliation but after the court reconciled them there was still no peace because Tembo got upset for dragging him to court.

Christine further said that Tembo stopped providing food for the family and that each time she wanted to leave the house he would stop her and called her a prostitute.

Christine further said that they had failed to pay for their daughter’s education after she passed grade ten examination.

My husband told me to look for money from my boyfriends to pay the for our daughter’s education;

“Tembo insults me and says that I am a prostitute; he even squeezed my neck and attempted to strip me naked in public. We sat several times but Tembo has failed to change,’’ said Christine.

In defence, Tembo said that problems started last year when Christine started coming home  late in the night and would insult him like he was a kid.

He explained that Christine denied him conjugal rights and that on January 19, the court reconciled them but she continued sleeping in clothes which prompted him to chase her from the bedroom because she was ‘punishing’ him.

Magistrate Miyanda said that they came to court for reconciliation but it failed and that there were no conjugal rights in the marriage adding that Tembo had no respect for his wife after he attempted to strip her in public.

He granted the couple divorce ordering Tembo to compensate Christine K12, 000 with initial payment of K1, 000 followed by monthly instalments of K300 and to be paying child maintenance fee of K400 per month. Property acquired together to be shared equally.
