OVER 150 new neighborhood watch members have been recruited in Ngwerere Ward 19 in Garden compound to help prevent crime in the area, says ward councillor Adrien Banda.

Mr Banda said that the exercise was undertaken after the current neighborhood watch members were relieved of their duties for failing to deliver to the community’s expectations. He advised the newly recruited members to be committed and vigilant by ensuring that they prevented crime, maintained security and brought perpetrators of crime to book or risked similar fate.

Meanwhile, police crime prevention unit chairperson Joseph Jere has appealed to the area councillor to engage relevant authorities to help increase the number of neighborhood watch members in the compound.

And the civic leader has reiterated his commitment to improving the lives of people in the area even with the limited resources available.

Mr Banda said that he has embarked on various development projects aimed at empowering people and bringing sanity to his community.

He was in the process of securing a block-making machine that will churn out 5,000 blocks a day for sale to empower youths in the compound.

The civic leader said that with support from the area Member of Parliament Jean Kapata, they will work hand in hand to upgrade the old market into a modern one.

Mr Banda also expressed happiness that 17 roads in the area will be tarred through the Link Zambia 400 project.

Meanwhile, residents of Garden compound have thanked the councillor for the gesture, saying it will go a long way in reducing crime in the area.

Mary Zulu said that the high number of criminals that have taken advantage of the current insecurity in the area to oppress innocent citizens will now face the law.
