THE Party for National Unity will not politicise the cholera issue but stands with Government to ensure causes of the pandemic are decisively dealt with, says president Highvie Hamududu.

Mr Hamududu said President Edgar Lungu’s observation that something must be done in Lusaka to correct the sanitation situation should be supported and that it must be a rallying point to clean the city.

He said councils around the country were inefficient and that the Urban Renewal Programme was long overdue as it would act as a solution to help address sanitation challenges and at the same time benefit most party cadres across political divides as well as youths who would be offered employment to clean and pave the towns.

In an interview with the Daily Nation yesterday, Mr Hamududu said the sewer system in Lusaka was pathetic as the area had not been upgraded from its historic background as a farming block to contain the ever increasing population.

“As the Party for National Unity we stand together with Government to ensure cholera and causes of the pandemic are dealt with.  Politics should be put aside and we need to stand together as a country,” Mr Hamududu said.

Mr Hamududu said the role of the opposition was not to criticise everything that Government was doing but that the outbreak of cholera should not be politicised as lives of citizens had been lost.

He said PNU would do its part by providing checks and balances to the government which was a true mark of patriotism.

Mr Hamududu said the fight against cholera required concerted efforts from all stakeholders such as other political parties’ civil society organisations and the church.

He said Zambia could learn from Rwanda in how it had managed to deal with street vendors as well as proper management of garbage by categorising plastic, paper and bio-degradable
materials for easy recycling.

Mr Hamududu said street vending in itself was not bad but it needed to be done properly such as through structured booths and in designated areas.
