PF told to stop complaining over Mumbi Phiri’s detention, High Court verdict

NAMWALA Member of Parliament, Herbert Mapani has advised Patriotic Front members to stop complaining about the Mongu High Court verdict in which former President Edgar Lungu’s barber, Shebby Chilekwa was convicted of murdering a United Party for National Development (UPND) supporter, Lawrence Banda.

Mr Mapani who is also a human rights advocate, told Millennium TV in an interview that instead of complaining, stakeholders should commend the UPND administration for allowing the judiciary to operate independently.

Last week, former PF Deputy Secretary-General, Mumbi Phiri was freed through a nolle prosequi hours before the judgement was delivered, which saw Chilekwa being jailed for 25 years for murder.

Mr Mapani said the case involving Ms Phiri and Chilekwa was dispensed in line with the Constitution, a situation which he claimed was rare during the previous regime. He added that the new dawn administration had ensured that no one was deemed to be above the law and that everyone faced justice regardless of their political affiliation.
