By SIMON MUNTEMBA

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has urged Zambians to refuse to fall into the trap of cynicism, tribalism and regionalism used by those who wish to pit one tribe against another.

And President Lungu has expressed concern at the wanton misinformation, particularly, on social media platforms meant to incite citizens to rise against the government.

Mr Lungu said this yesterday at Mongu’s Trades Institute during the official launch of the PF Western Province conference.

He urged Zambians to adopt a nationalistic approach that sees the nation first before the tribe, and that which pursues the benefits of society above self-interests because Zambia was “bigger than anyone of us.”

The President said in the concerted efforts to take Zambia to glorious heights, people should not allow the lies, fear mongering, and divisive words of prophets of doom to poison their minds, weaken their patriotism, and bring havoc to the nation.

“I, therefore, urge you all to refuse to fall into the trap of cynicism, tribalism and regionalism; tactics used by those who wish to go back to old strategies used by colonialists of “divide and rule”; by pitting one tribe against another. We must prevent this colonialism,” President Lungu said.

Meanwhile, The President said fake news was not only in Zambia but all governments were grappling with it because it was inimical to societal cohesion, and stability.

He said it was important that, as citizens, Zambians verify information before it was taken as gospel truth.

Mr Lungu who quoted Pope Francis warned that “internet-based fake news’ is fermenting prejudice and hatred, and our culture is losing its sense of truth as it bends the facts to suit particular interests.”

AS the Patriotic Front, he said, we must rise up to the challenge in defence of truth and what is good for the sake of Zambia’s peace, stability, and all-inclusive economic recovery and growth.

And the President urged PF members to ensure that the conference was symbolic of a new beginning for the ruling party in Western Province as well as the rest of the country.

To those of you contesting elections, he said, I urge you to canvass in a civil and united manner.

He said after the results were announced, it was important to congratulate one another and offer hands of friendship to those who would not make it.
