MAZABUKA mayor has been urged to use the law against people interfering with the running of Markets and Bus Stations in the district.

Lusaka Province Minister Japhen Mwakalombe said this during the installation of the Mayor of Mazabuka District held at the District’s Civic Center.

Mr Mwakalombe stated that he was aware that there had been a lot of interferences in the running of Markets and bus stations and warned that the Bus Stations and Markets Act was still in force as government had ensured that the Local Government was enshrined in the Constitution. ‘‘Iam aware that the Zambian Constitution under Article 152 (2) states that, the National government and the Provincial administration shall not interfere with or compromise a Local Authority’s ability or right to perform its function,’’ he said.

The Chongwe Parliamentarian further urged the newly elected Mayor Vincent Lilanda, his deputy Chipo Chiya and the Town clerk Wisdom Bwalya to attend the orientation programmes which the Ministry of Local Government and Housing would be conducting soon for all Councils which he said were important because they would enable him conduct Council business in line with the government’s aspiration.

Mr Mwakalombe added that government would still continue to supervise Councils so that obligations to the people were attained in line with government’s vision and programmes.

He  told Mr Lilanda  and Mr Chiya  that in order for them to succeed in his duties with Councilors, there was need to work together with all members of staff for the betterment of the District.

Mr Mwakalombe also appealed to the locals to honour their obligations by paying for services to the Council timely and consistently so that the Council would continue to provide services to the community.

He congratulated the Mayor and his Deputy on their election to the higher offices and wished them success as they endeavoured to deliver their promises to the people of Mazabuka.
