Kwacha movie impresses fans

By Terence Miselo

The highly publicized Cassie Kabwita local film Kwacha opened on Wednesday at Ster Kenikor with an impressive start which left most guests stunned with the production and storyline.

The guests mainly drawn from the film industry, media and the general public filled the cinema hall where Kwacha first premiered and kept engaged for more than an hour following the movie.

Produced for both Zambia and Tanzanian audiences under the gender-based violence theme, the film is a clear testimony of the common stories and challenges Zambia and Tanzania are facing in dealing with domestic violence.

For this reason, it features actors from both countries who share similar understanding on the subject.

The story championed by Kabwita acting as Kwacha married to Tanzanian…..playing as Church was well executed and achieved its aim of raising awareness on gender-related violence.

Kabwita played her role very professionally, showing two different sides of her character in the movie beginning with this village young woman who goes to the city and becomes a successful film actress surrounded by pomp and splendor.

The story also brought out several themes like social media, gossip and show buzz that are part of modern day society.

It was impressing to see what one would term first time Zambian actors that executed their roles diligently. Musician and producer KB is one occasional actor who revealed his potential in the film. His role as this abusive husband who ended up in jail after killing his wife was excellently executed. The same goes to Mumba Yachi, Zodwa Khumalo and Roz Zulu. They may not be regular actors but their influence in the movie was very visible.

Of course, Owas Ray Mwape playing as ‘Film Director’ was awesome and hilarious adding that memorable touch to the film. His experience and growth tells you Zambia is on the right track.

Technically, the production team did its homework. Maynard was on point with the camera. The locations were equally amazing and so was the sound.

However, one notes flaws in the execution of the entire story line. The social media theme was mishandled and leaves lots of questions unanswered. All in all, it is a good production and kudos to Cassie Kabwita, the reason she is the only female King.
