THE best way of appreciating the great freedom fighters of the past from all communities, religions, and ideologies who carried on the fearless struggle for freedom from colonial rule is by safeguarding peace and unity so far enjoyed, says  freedom fighter Christine Mulundika.

In an interview, Ms Mulundika appealed for peace among Zambians adding that all political party members, cadres and others must desist from any form of unrest or violence.

She urged all Zambians to remain committed in supporting moves that were aimed at promoting peace, stability, democracy and prosperity.

“Every Zambian must live in dignity and avoid confrontations that could deter national peace and unity. It will be completely unacceptable that the country we fought for could be marred by any violence or disorder after over 53 years of independence.

In fact, the best way to honour the great freedom fighters is by safeguarding the freedom, peace and democratic rights, and proceed to a future that moves further from the re-emerging forces of colonialism,” Ms Mulundika said.

Ms. Mulundika further noted that the strengthening and progress of peace in any country requires every body’s continued support to efforts aimed at finding lasting solutions to regional conflicts.

“The continuing strength of freedom that was won in October 1964, requires every body’s continued support to efforts aimed at finding lasting solutions to regional conflicts and re-kindling the spirit of freedom throughout our land,” she said.

This celebration of freedom, she said, is the time to pay our tribute to the security forces that defended our sovereignty and territorial integrity with great sacrifice in the battle against terrorism.

Ms Mulundika said the African freedom day also reminded her of the great freedom fighters of the past from all communities, religions, and ideologies who carried on the struggle for freedom from colonial rule.

And Ms Mulundika pointed out that this was also the time to remember the spirit of unity that had prevailed in our land through the centuries, and drives the nation to work hard to achieve national unity in all its aspects, with reconciliation that comes through loving and kindness to all.

She further said that the progress of our nation in unity and understanding calls for patriotism that not only transcends the barriers of geography and community, but also focuses on the elimination of corruption in all its forms, and encourages genuine service to the people by their leaders.

“As we move forward in freedom, let us ensure the strengthening of peace and harmony to bring every success to our children and future generation who will inherit this land.

Let us join in a pledge to build a future of peace, freedom and prosperity in the shining light of honesty of purpose and Good Governance,” she said.
