GOVERNMENT is committed to addressing challenges faced by police officers in the execution of their work, Chavuma district commissioner Benjamin Mufunga has said.

He said Government, under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu, recognised the important role police officers played in society and was determined to address all challenges they faced such as inadequate transport, poor housing and shortage of office space, among others.

Mr Mufunga was speaking during the Zambia Police Service Open Day celebrations in Chavuma.

He also disclosed that Government would soon resume work on the construction of a police station in the district which has stalled at roof level.

“Government under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu is aware of the challenges that police officers face and it is determined to address those challenges,” Mr Mufunga said.

He said this year’s theme “Enhancing professionalism and accountability, to provide a safe, secure and peaceful environment” was well drafted as it would promote professionalism in the Zambia Police Service.

Mr Mufunga said the essence of holding the Zambia Police Open Day was for the community to interact with police officers in order to create a good rapport with citizens.

He called on the community in Chavuma to join the Zambia Police wing and form Neighbourhood Watch Associations in a bid to create a safe and peaceful environment for residents.

Acting Chuvuma police officer-in-charge Sydney Kafusha said the Zambia Police Service was a professional institution which strongly upholds its ethics such as accountability, integrity and honesty in its quest to provide a peaceful environment for the people and foster economic development.

Mr Kafusha said time was long gone when members of the public used to look at police officers as their enemies.

He urged the people of Chavuma to take advantage of the open day and interact with police officers on a personal level and learn more about the Zambia Police Service and its operations.

And scores of Chavuma residents took advantage of the open day and accessed a lot of services which were being offered by police officers for free during the commemorations.
