THE Church has a vital role to play in the fight against Gender Based Violence in Zambia and therefore needs to scale up its efforts, Lusaka Conference of the Seventh-day Adventists Youth Director Pastor Highten Hamweene has said.

He told the Daily Nation in an interview that the Church needs to encourage couples to have marriage refresher courses.

He said the increase of GBV cases in Zambia is worrying, calling upon the Church to scale up its efforts in fighting the vice.

“Marriage is a long term process, it takes a lifetime and there can be challenges along the way, issues to do with communication, how to handle conflict and the likes; these are things we must talk about frequently as a Church so that we can help our members,” Pastor Hamweene said.

He noted that marriage is not a ‘‘bed of roses’’ and urged couples to always find amicable ways to deal with the challenges.

“It is a well-known fact that no matter how good the marriage is, people will have challenges and conflict.

This happens everywhere but challenges need to be handled,” he said.

He reiterated that there was need for the Church to step up and help the situation by holding marriage counselling seminars.

“What is happening in our country is unacceptable. The spouse killings are unfortunate and there is something that we can do as a Church,” he said.
