By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

A TEACHER union in North-Western Province says it expects government to increase salaries for teachers in the 2023 national budget.

Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) provincial chairperson Gilly Kakunta said in an interview that the union salary increase for the teachers across the country.

Mr Kakunta said teachers are suffering as the salaries are low.

“Therefore we expect that government will increase the salaries, and that will be a very big motivation for teachers,” said Mr Kakunta.

He also said the union expects the government to reduce interest rates on bank loans to enable not only teachers but other public service workers access to affordable loans.

He said their members are tired of getting smaller amounts of loans which they pay at a high fee.

Mr Kakunta has also indicated that his expects government to continue on the same trajectory of teacher’s recruitment in the country.

He said this will help in the reduction of the teacher pupil ratio as well as reducing unemployment levels in the country.

He said his also happy that government has maintained its promise of providing grants to schools without delay.

“This should continue so that schools are able to plan ahead,” he said.
