CHAMBISHI residents say government’s delay to declare the township a district has worked against them because most decisions relating to their welfare are made in Kalulushi district without their input.

Speaking on behalf of the residents, John Sichangwa said President Edgar Lungu should consider expediting the declaration of Chambishi as a district because the people in the area faced social and economic challenges as a result of Chambishi being an annex of Kalulushi district.

Mr Sichangwa said in a statement that Chambishi had all facilities required for the township to attain district status on the Copperbelt.

“I would like to commend President Edgar Lungu for not abandoning our late President Michael Sata’s idea of creating new districts. The creation of new districts has brought development to these otherwise underdeveloped areas.

“On behalf of the residents of Chambishi, I would also like to appeal to President Lungu to consider creating Chambishi as a district. Chambishi has all it takes to hold a district status. The people in the area have suffered socially and economically as a result of Chambishi being an annex of Kalulushi district,” Mr Sichangwa said.

He added: “Most decisions pertaining to the well-being of Chambishi residents are currently being made in Kalulushi. This arrangement has greatly affected Chambishi residents who have been longing to see the area turned into a district.”

He hoped President Lungu would listen to the residents’ cry and grant them their wish.
