FORMER Zambia national team players humiliated Members of Parliament 6-1 in an Independence tournament played at Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka yesterday.
The former Chipolopolo players were too good for the inexperienced and heavy-footed parliamentarians, opening the flood gates in the eighth minute through Noel Mwandila.
Kabushi MP Bowman Lusambo denied the parliamentarians the first goal when he shot over the bar.
Substitutes Sports minister Moses Mawere and Matero MP Lloyd Kazhiya failed to convert clear scoring chances.
Linos Makwaza doubled the score for the ex-Chipolopolo Boys in the 15th minute before Linos Chalwe and Peter Mutale increased the tally to 4-0 before half-time.
In the second half, Mutale grabbed a brace to make it 5-0 for the former national team players with the parliamentarians’ defence escorting the striker to the goal.
However, the introduction of Shiwan’gandu MP Stephen Kampyongo changed the tempo of the game as the MPs picked up speed.
Kampyongo sent a scare to the former Chipolopolo Boys when his thunderbolt slightly missed the post. But he lasted only 10 minutes of play. The Shiwan’gandu MP was substituted after showing signs of extreme fatigue.
Fifteen minutes before the final whistle, the parliamentarians were awarded a penalty after Makwaza fouled Milanzi MP Whiteson Banda. Banda nicely converted the consolation goal for the MPs.
Dabwitso Nkhoma sealed off the victory for the ex-Chipolopolo men with a soft touch as Zanaco coach Mumamba Numba exhibited brilliant skills in midfield for the former Chipolopolo.
After the game, Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Mwimba Malama called for healthy living among MPs. Malama said sports was key to a health life and reconciliation as Zambia celebrates her 52nd Independence anniversary.
“I commend the Ministry of Sports for organizing such a tournament providing a healthy lifestyle among MPs. Sports has no political affiliation but remains a unifying factor,” he said.
The netball team led by Kanyama MP Elizabeth Phiri thrashed OYDC 25-0.
