Use grants prudently, school managers told

By Jackson Mapapayi
SCHOOL managers have been advised to prudently utilise the grants given by government.

The Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) in North western province has asked mismanagement of funds was detrimental to development and called for prudent use of resources.
PROTUZ provincial chairperson Gilly Kakunta said the union will not defend any school head teacher who will be found wanting.

“As a union, we are advising head teachers to handle these funds government has given to schools for the benefit of a child. Otherwise, we will not defend and support anyone found wanting because that’s total abuse of public resources, ” said Mr Kakunta.

He said government is trying its level best in ensuring that schools are well financed through the release of grants on time.
And Mr Kakunta said the disbursement of funds to schools on time is timely.
He said the move will help schools prepare ahead of the opening of schools saying this has never happened before in previous governments.

He said the funds may not be enough according to school population but that they will help in the initial operations of schools.
“It is just a matter of seeing how the funds can be used, but so far so good, ” he said.
