CHURCH LEADERS URGED TO GUIDE POLITICIANS

By ANDREW MUKOMA

CHURCH leaders in the country should be in forefront guiding politicians as the nation is heading to the general elections, former National Guidance and Religious Affairs Minister Godfridah Sumaili has said.

Reverend Sumaili said that next month’s elections should reflect the will of the people, hence Church leaders must guide politicians all the time.

The former minister was speaking in Livingstone.

“So, we are asking the church to speak peace. Zambia has been a haven of peace. This is who we are as a people, we’re peaceful people, we’re loving people, we’re are people of hospitality and recently we put to rest the First Republican President Dr Kaunda who himself was a peacemaker.

“Dr Kaunda being the founding President has laid the foundation for many things and one of the things he taught us is to love God with all your heart, with all your strength and love your neighbor as you love yourself. And that is where the One Zambia, One Nation came from because you cannot be in unity or live peacefully where there is no love,” she said.

Rev Sumaili said therefore that Zambians should embrace and ensure and ensure that from generation to generation the country remains a peaceful, loving and united nation.

“You know we are so used to peace around us and sometimes we don’t know how it is to be in conflict but people who come from outside Zambia and in our nation feel the peace,” Rev Sumaili said.

She said it was incumbent upon spiritual and Church leaders to guide politicians and ensure thar they embrace peace and unity.

“Our spiritual leaders, the church should to be in forefront to guide us in this time, to guide the nation. As we are campaigning, let people talk about issues, there is no need to assassinate each other, let us talk about what we have done for the people and what we intend to do.

“We want this nation to be lifted from one glory to the other. We as leaders, you are carrying that authority and power to speak no violence and there shall be no violence,” she said.
