CHINESE POLICE RESERVES IN ZAMBIAN POLICE SERVICE?

Dear Editor

IT IS a well known fact that almost all construction projects currently in Zambia are undertaken by Chinese firms. This is a good gesture as they provide Jobs to many of our unemployed youths, though with a lot of casualisation and flouting of labor laws.

In addition, for every 5 people you meet, 3 are likely to wear Chinese made cloths, either original or fake products. It is also a well known fact that most fake products in Zambia are made by Chinese. In short, Zambia is synonymous with China.

With unemployment levels sky rocketing high, most Zambian Youths, will respond to any news paper advert seeking to be employed by the Government even when they dont have the basic qualifications.

This is evidenced by the just ended teacher recruitment  exercise which attracted over 15000 applicants but only a pastry 3148 were deemed “successful” a move which was regarded as corrupt by some sections of society! That is not all Zambia Police Service had advertised for recruitment of Police Reserves sometime back, they received overwhelming response even among teachers who are already employed. The Police Command had a tough time screening candidates and many were turned back. This just shows how difficulty it is to join the public service in Zambia.T he basic requirement for one to be employed in the Zambian public Service is that one must be a Zambian, with a Green National Registration Card, besides academic and professional requirements.

However, that 8 Chinese Nationals found it easy to be employed and commissioned as Police reserves due to’ shortage of manpower’ as alluded by the IG leaves much to be desired.

Had people not complained, the IG would not have decommissioned them and they would have been arresting Zambians in their own Country! While I appreciate that the Police is overstretched, I dont agree with The IG to engage foreigners to man our security system. It is  a fact that Foreigners are not allowed in Military cantonment, but how did Kanganja sink so low as to allow the Chinese to infiltrate in our system? If there is an acute shortage of staff, the IG should engage the PS Home Affairs to recruit more officers next year.

In fact let each training school recruit 1000 officers so that we equal the number of teachers that were recently recruited. If Lilayi, Sondela and Kamfinsa could be given such figures then the issue of engaging Chinese wouldn’t have even arised. Maybe they are Zambians, but how special are they to have a special ceremony? To me Kanganja has failed the Zambians and as such he must resign on moral grounds and let the Commander -in- Chief appoint  someone else.
