Zesco re-sign Were

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

ZESCO United have confirmed the return of Kenyan international Jesse Were who had left the Ndola outfit to join Kansanshi Dynamos during the January 2022 transfer window.

As Zesco United’s top scorer, Were returns to Ndola after the expiry of his contract at Kansanshi Dynamos where he was able to score eight goals to help the club finish the log on seventh position last year.

Zesco confirmed in a statement that Were returned to Ndola after signing a short-term contract with the nine-times champions of Zambia.

“Zesco United is delighted to announce the return of the Kenyan international star striker and century goal top scorer Jesse Jackson Were from Kansanshi Dynamos Football Club,” the club said in a statement issued by media and public relations officer Verita Muyunda.

Zesco encouraged the Kenyan to score another century milestone in his second stint at the Ndola outfit who are chasing their 10th Super League crown.

As the first player to score 100 goals for Zesco United, Were first joined the Ndola giants in 2016 from the Kenyan Premier League side Tusker FC before his troph- laden five years ended at Zesco.

During his first stint at Zesco, Were went on to win four league titles, two ABSA Cup championships and two Charity Shield titles.

Were is seen as a perfect signing after the club lost Chipolopolo midfielder Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba who joined Libyan side Al-Nasr Benghazi.

Mubanga, who is in Ivory Coast with the Chipolopolo boys at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast has been a key member of the Zesco United squad this season after contributing seven goals, winning the club’s player of the match back to back in September and October.

Al-Nasr Benghazi who reached the quarter finals of the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2019/2020 season has two Libyan Premier League titles to their name and three Libyan Cup titles.

Al-Nasr Benghazi currently lead Group A of the Libyan Premier League with 18 points after eight games played.
