UNZA debt dismantling continues
By IRVIN MUYUMBWA
THE University of Zambia (UNZA) says Government has made progress in liquidating the K2.5 billion debt the higher learning institution owes in statutory obligations and other arrears.
UNZA Registrar Rodgers Phiri said so far, retirees who were on the payroll up to 2016 have been cleared and taken off the payroll, thereby saving resources.
Mr Phiri said serving members of staff who were owed gratuity have been paid up to December, 2012 while another K28 million has been disbursed towards paying out debt owed to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).
He said currently, UNZA owes both retired and serving staff dating back to 2013 but the dismantling of the outstanding arrears would continue.
Mr Phiri said management is confident that the new dawn administration will continue as demonstrated in the yellow book on the allocation of grants to the institution which would continue with the dismantling of the debt.
