UNIP seeks to bounce back – Bishop Mwamba

By NAMO PHIRI

WE are preparing to bounce back into power in 2026 after four decades in the political wilderness because the people of Zambia have regained their faith in the Country’s oldest party, United National Independence Party (UNIP) Trevor Mwamba has said.

Speaking in Lusaka during the party’s 63rd birthday celebrations, Bishop Mwamba said the leadership in the country’s oldest party was working on reviving the party’s spirit of self-attraction with the desire to taking back the governance of the country.

He said there was still hope for the former ruling party to form government especially that it had continued to remain strong since 1991 when it lost power to MMD.

Bishop Mwamba said the party was still popular not only in Zambia but also in other countries across Africa especially nations that were assisted during the struggle of their independence.

“I believe the value of a political party is that it serves and brings benefit to the people in the communities in which it exists whether it is in power or out of power.  True power is always about service in some form or shape for the Zambian people,” Bishop Mwamba said

He said the party was focusing on recruiting more youths who were capable to take over the leadership because the leadership had recognized the need to conform to new ways of doing things in order to connect with voters.

“We recognize the need to recruit more youths into the party if we are to progress and as a leadership, we have resolved to put recruiting of young people on top of our agenda,” Bishop Mwamba Mwamba said

And speaking at the same event, party Lusaka Province Chairperson Allan Malawo has maintained Mike Kaira and Lazarous Mwiche who are still masquerading as Vice President and Secretary General respectively still remain suspended from the party.

Mr Malawo said the duo remain suspended and their personal agenda and opinions are not the policy decisions of the party and they shall not be allowed to mislead the general membership.
