ZAMBIA is a fantastic country and Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) will continue to contribute significantly to the development of Kitwe and Mufulira where it operates, says chief executive officer Johan Jansen.

Mr Jansen said his company was in the middle of implementing a 10-year plan to transform its operation into a world-class mining operation by 2023.

He was speaking yesterday when his company pledged to contribute K55, 000 towards the Kitwe City Council (KCC) “Pave Kitwe Walk Ways Campaign.

“Mopani is a great company, Kitwe is a great city and Zambia is a fantastic country. So as Mopani, we will contribute K55, 000 towards the development of thriving towns including Kitwe and Mufulira where we operate,

“The Pave Kitwe Way campaign ties perfectly well in our company’s main focus areas of promoting healthy living and safety among our employees and community,” said Mr Jansen

He said, his company responded positively to the invitation to join hands with the council administration on the campaign chiefly because of the great importance that people at MCM attached to initiatives to improve the outlook of the city and the livelihood of people of Kitwe and Mufulira.

Mr Jansen said MCM was always eager to be part of the initiative and was recently involved on the works of the Kitwe Ring Road and the Sabina-Mufulira Roads which were a testimony to its commitment.

He also said recently, the company joined hands with the City Fathers to put up a temporal bridge on Mate-mate stream between Ndeke and Mulenga townships.

“We are also happy to have teamed up with other corporate citizens in Kitwe to build the Mwekera Bridge in Kitwe East and ensure that more than 5,000 people were not cut-off from the rest of Kitwe.

“It is initiatives such as these that give us a deep sense of satisfaction as a good and responsible corporate citizens of our greater city of Kitwe,” Mr Jansen said.

And speaking earlier, Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe said MCM was a major stakeholder in the city and it has always been helpful whenever called upon.
