THE pathetic work culture in public health institutions is caused mainly by lack of Government’s seriousness in carrying out inspections on the operations of its workers in those institutions, says 3rd Liberation Movement president, Enoch Tonga.

Speaking to the Daily Nation in an interview, Mr Tonga said it was disappointing to learn that some health specialists in public health institutions took their work for granted because Government did not carry out random inspections in these places of work.

He said the deplorable attitude of some health practitioners in public health institutions was due to lack of motivation by Government and unfavorable working environments.

“Most of these civil servants in public health institutions lack motivation by Government and their work environments are very unfavorable,” he said.

Mr Tonga said civil servants were paid little which demotivated them and lowered their zeal to work with full potential.

He said it was Government’s duty to make sure that there was sanity among workers in the civil service.

“Government needs to stiffen rules in these public health institutions because many of these workers have taken their work for granted by reporting for work late, and knocking off before time,” he said.

He said public health institutions were the same like other public institutions such as schools and security wings, among others.

Mr Tonga urged Government to take good care of its workers by meeting their needs through salary increments and improved conditions of service for effective service delivery.

He said civil servants had a lot of potential to deliver accordingly but were being drawn back due to lack of motivation by Government. He stated that corruption was another problem in the civil service due to lack of motivation.

“Corruption has continued from time immemorial and the trend would not stop if nothing is done from the top people in Government,” he said.

Mr Tonga said Zambia could not develop if Government did not, together with stakeholders, improve service delivery in all sectors of the economy, especially the civil service.
