MUOMBO village in Mungwi district, Northern Province, has been cut off from the rest of the district after heavy rains washed away the main bridge.

Mfinshe ward of Malole constituency in Mungwi district has been cut off due to heavy rains that washed away the

Mfinshe ward area councilor, Anthony Mubanga, told the Daily Nation in an interview that the Muombo/Mwinsalila bridge had been damaged cutting off the village from the Mungwi Central Business District (CBD) where people access most of the social services such as health care.

“The people of Mwinsalila and Muombo have been cut off from the school and clinic respectively. These services are found on either side of the Mfinshe River which cuts across the ward.

“This is more disastrous for the people of Muombo who have been denied the services that can only be found in the central business district of Mungwi.

Some teachers who had gone for personal errands such as university and college residentials are marooned in Mungwi. This is a disadvantage to our leaners in Muombo,” he said.

Mr. Mubanga was however quick to clarify that, the floods would not in any way affect agriculture activities since people were mainly into rice growing which cannot succumb to minimal flooding.

“My appeal to government and well-wishers is for the provision of a banana boat which can be used as we wait to repair the bridge after the rainy season. We do not want to have a repeat of the experience of 2014 in which four girls were swept away by the current as they tried to cross the river,” he said.

Mr. Mubanga disclosed that he had since informed the Disaster Management Unit (DMMU) at both the district and provincial levels over the development.
