Govt shocks grain traders

By NATION REPORTER

THE Grain Traders Association of Zambia (GTA) says it is in shock that Government has announced the ban on export of maize when the ban was effected in January last year.

Agriculture Minister, Mtolo Phiri has announced that there would be no more exports of maize until the government ascertained how much stock the country would have after the next harvest.

Mr. Phiri said the country had about 800, 000 metric tons of maize of which an excess of 300, 000 metric tonnes of maize was at the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) and 300, 000 metric tonnes was with millers and traders.

But GTA spokesperson Yotam Mkandawire said traders had not been exporting maize since January last year, stressing that the government was supposed to be consistent with its policies.

In an interview, Mr Mkandawire said the government through the Ministry of Agriculture had not issued any maize export permit since last year.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
