THE Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ) has commended Government for strengthening the law against street vending and public nuisance.

This follows the decision by the Ministry of Local Government to amend penalties for 22 offences contained in the Statutory Instrument and introduced 33 new offences in the Statutory Instrument (SI).

In a statement yesterday, LGAZ president, Christopher Kang’ombe, expressed hope that the Local Government Street Vending and Nuisances (Amendment) Regulations, Statutory Instrument No 10 of 2018, would go a long way in addressing challenges associated with street vending.

“As LGAZ we would like to commend Government for strengthening the street vending and nuisance law,” said Mr. Kang’ombe.

Mr Kang’ombe encouraged local authorities to establish strategic partnerships in ensuring enforcement of the provisions of the SI.

He said it was everyone’s responsibility to enhance and sustain high levels of sanitation.

Mr. Kang’ombe appealed to the public to take keen interest in understanding provisions of the new law and to cooperate with their respective local authorities.

He also urged all local authorities to put in place sensitization programmes so that residents were enlightened on the new law’s provisions.
