BEWARE OF CONMEN, TRADERS WARNED

LUSAKA Mayor, Wilson Kalumba has warned newly re-allocated traders at Lusaka’s City market to be on the lookout for people purporting to have been tasked by LCC to levy them.

Mr Kalumba’s caution comes in the wake of numerous complaints from traders that the Vendors Association of Zambia was allegedly asking them to pay K200 levies for occupying stands.

“City Market belongs to Lusaka City Council and as far as Iam concerned, no decision has been made by us to charge vendors any amount for trading space in City Market,” he said.

Mr Kalumba explained that vendors have been screened to verify those who had stands in the market.

“The situation became tense when word went round that the Association was demanding payment of K200 from vendors before they could be allocated space,” he said. 

Mr. Kalumba revealed that after some representatives of the Vendors Association of Zambia were summoned to his office, they claimed that the money was meant for repairing the roof.

He however said the matter had since been resolved.

Mayor Kalumba appealed to vendors to be patient as the local authority identifies and designates more trading places to accommodate them.
