Lusaka executive mayor Wilson Kalumba has called on residents of the city to ensure that they celebrate the forthcoming Christmas season responsibly, saying they should not over-indulge themselves by spending  or drinking carelessly.

Mr. Kalumba said that the festive season was a time for people to be merry and rejoice ‘‘but they should not forget the fact that there is life after Christmas and New Year celebrations and as such they should celebrate cautiously’’.

He said it was the responsibility of every resident to ensure they took charge of their own lives and the safety of those around them.

Mr. Kalumba said ‘‘people should not forget the fact that there is life after Christmas and New Year and they should not waste their lives in the name of celebrating the festive season’’.

He said that there are many ways in which people could celebrate the festive season without causing harm to themselves or those around them.

‘’It is my earnest appeal to the people in the city to ensure that they celebrate peacefully, orderly and most important of all responsibly, for they alone are responsible for their lives and no one will take responsibility if anything bad happens to them,’’ he said.

Mr. Kalumba also called on the police to be on high alert and ensure that they maintain law and order during the festive period.

He said the police should not hesitate to bring to book anyone who will be found contravening the laws of the land.

Mr. Kalumba said that the police should also increase patrols in the townships so as to ensure that people did not take advantage of the celebrations to start engaging in illegal activities.

‘’The police should be on high alert and ensure that they apprehend any person who will be found committing crimes during the festive period,’’ he said.
