TWO boys aged between 19 and 20 on Sunday drowned in a well in Ndola’s Chifubu Township.

According to witnesses’ ac-count to the Daily Nation yesterday, the incident happened around 07:00 hours as the duo was trying to dig a disused well.

A combined team of fire fighters and police officers only managed to retrieve the bodies around 11:00 hours.

The witnesses said that the first boy drowned after entering into the well and when the friend made attempts to rescue him, he also drowned.

One of the witnesses, Henry Bwalya, said the boys frequented a house which was under construction to ask for casual work where the well was dug along time ago. “We did advise the boys not to attempt to work on the well as the exercise was dangerous during the rainy season but they were stubborn .The first one decided to enter into it but did not come out and that was when the friend attempted to rescue him but both drowned,” he said.

“I do not know these boys but I just see them around this place they came early in the morning saying that they want to dig up the well because they wanted money for school,” he said.

Copperbelt Police Commissioner, Charity Katanga, confirmed the incident but could not give details and asked to be contacted later. Ms. Katanga said she was aware of the boys drowning but her office had not been furnished with a report yet.
