Chilufya sues ACC, demands US$50m

FORMER Health minister Chitalu Chilufya has sued the Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) in the Lusaka High Court for malicious prosecution and is demanding USD50 Million for damaging his reputation.

This follows his arrest and prosecution  last year while serving as Cabinet minister. ACC charged him with different offenses, which included, being in possession of property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime and corrupt practices.

He was tried in the Lusaka Magistrates Court and was acquitted after ACC failed to provide evidence linking him to the offences.

Dr Chilufya in his claim filed in the Lusaka High Court yesterday, wants ACC to pay him damages for malicious prosecution as well as exemplary and aggravated damages to be assessed.

He wants an order for damages in the sum of USD50 Million being damages to his reputation following malicious publications attributed to ACC,  for intimidation, libel and defamation to be assessed.

He is claiming special damages for loss of business and USD100, 000 as legal fees he spent to defend himself in the Subordinate court.

Dr Chilufya stated that ACC did not bother to verify their allegations but proceeded to prosecute him.

He said that even before the investigative wings could verify the allegations, they rushed to the media to announce his arrest and charges brought against him whichinformation was shared on all media platforms as a corrupt thief.
