THERE is need for Zambians to learn best practices from American universities as they have been in existence for a longer period than our universities, Minister of Higher Learning Nkandu Luo has said.

Speaking when she officially opened the Maya Anglou American corner at the National Institute for Public Administration (NIPA) in Lusaka yesterday, Professor  Luo said there was need for Zambian universities to enter into partnerships with prominent universities in the United States of America.

She said Zambia had a lot to learn from the USA and the partnerships would help to change the mindset of students and lecturers to foster national development.

Prof Luo said the American corner would encourage Zambians to learn about the USA and in turn Americans would also learn about Zambia.

She said that the American corner was a lesson to Zambians that those who contributed to the country were supposed to be celebrated.

“We wish to thank the American people who have always partnered with us in different sectors, and I must emphasize that partnerships between countries are very important, we need each other, even big economies like the USA cannot stand alone, this gives you a picture of the importance of partnerships at this point in the world,” Prof Luo said.

And American ambassador to Zambia Daniel Foote said the corner would build bridges between the USA and Zambia.

He said he was overwhelmed by the new platform for the relationship between the two countries as exchange of information was key.

Mr Foote said the American government was grateful to NIPA for the opportunity for the government to establish an American corner at the institution

He said the corner was named after a great African American civil rights activist.
