THE suspect in Mapalo Chanda’s murder case, Talent Munkombwe yesterday told the Kalomo Subordinate Court that he was 16 years old, when in earlier statements he had indicated that he was 25.

When the matter came up on Thursday before Magistrate Kahonyi Mushabati, plea could not be taken because Munkombwe told the court that he was 16 years old.

The court has since directed the police to verify the actual age for the suspect who was now claiming to be a juvenile.

In the Zambian law, offenders under the age of 16 are not tried under the general law, but are tried under the Juveniles Act which provided lesser punishment.

The matter was then adjourned to September 28 to ascertain his age.

Mapalo, who was the brother of PF media director Sunday Chanda was an employee of the Auditor General’s office, and was in Kalomo, Southern province for work when he was brutally murdered and his body dumped in a pit latrine.
